Issues We Care About
-
Academic Excellence
Unfortunately, the Albemarle County school system seems to be in a downward trajectory in recent years: test scores are falling, absenteeism and violence are increasing, teachers are leaving, and enrollment is down despite population growth. Much of this may be a result of the pandemic, but the downward trend continues.

Teacher & Staff support
Like many teachers in Albemarle County today, I could barely afford to support a growing family on a teacher’s salary in the 1990s. As our family grew, my decision to change careers was, in part, due to low compensation. I want to ensure that good teachers are being paid well enough to allow them to remain in the Albemarle County Public School (ACPS) system.

Safe Schools
From my experience as a teacher and coach (and parent), students need to have structure and boundaries and some positive activities (sports, arts, music, etc) to channel their energy.

Career Preparation
Our oldest son took the CNA (certified nurse aid) course at CATEC and went on to get his Masters of Nursing at UVA and works as an RN at UVA hospital. Our youngest daughter had the opportunity to do two different internships during her senior year at AHS that helped with her career path decisions.

Improved Communication
As I talk with parents and teachers in the community, a common theme is that many do not feel like the Board hears their concerns or gives them an opportunity to be involved in improving the school system.
