Academic Excellence
Unfortunately, the Albemarle County school system seems to be in a downward trajectory in recent years: test scores are falling, absenteeism and violence are increasing, teachers are leaving, and enrollment is down despite population growth. Much of this may be a result of the pandemic, but the downward trend continues.
Test scores have dropped every year since 2019:
Less than 70% of all students passed math & science SOLs last school year.
Less than 50% of Black & Hispanic students passed reading, writing, math & science tests last year.
35% of all 3rd graders (and 69% of Black 3rd graders) failed the reading SOL last year.
ACPS needs a renewed focus on reading and math in 1st-3rd grades and core subjects (math, science, language arts) through high school.
I recommend:
Working with teachers and guidance counselors to improve the system of tracking (at the middle and high school levels) to boost the educational performance of students at all ability levels.
Revamping the current grading policies to encourage students to complete assignments on time and prepare for graded work (rather than rely on retakes). Provide remediation as needed.
Recruiting volunteers (UVA Madison House, high school seniors, retirees) to tutor and mentor at risk students in grades 1-8.
